Old failing, black metal amalgam fillings hold potential for future problems within our teeth. Time is showing that old amalgam restorations create stresses on the surrounding tooth structure and in the end teeth could crack and break down, or decay could leak underneath the fillings. If treated early, teeth have better long-term prognosis. We are now able to better advise when it is time to replace old amalgam fillings.

On teeth which have larger holes or cracks, we may recommend using porcelain crowns or porcelain onlays to restore the tooth with either porcelain inlays or onlays or porcelain crowns. This returns significant strength to our teeth and helps to prevent fatal fractures in teeth.

Porcelain onlays will significantly outlast white fillings.
