Procedures to grow and repair bone around our teeth are now an everyday part of Dentistry at Smile Artistry™. Tooth Extraction Socket Grafting is routinely placed into the space from where teeth are removed to preserve the typical loss of bone when teeth are removed. This prevents downward gum growth into the extraction hole and encourages and maximises bone growth, allowing for the most cosmetic and functional restorative option whether that be Delayed Dental Implant Placement, a Porcelain Bridge , or Denture Plate to replace the tooth being removed. A Bone Graft when a tooth is removed in comparison to just removing a tooth and no grafting, where a tooth was removed without grafting undergoes Rapid Bone Resorption, with the gums collapsing in after time, and creating larger defects as time goes on than an area that was grafted. (Jan Lindhe, 2007)
Bio-Oss® is a specially bioengineered graft material that helps support bone formation. Bio-Oss® is bovine of origin and undergoes highly controlled processing and sterilisation procedures which remove all impurities. Every batch of Bio-Oss passes rigorous sterility and purity tests, assuring total safety and guarantee. Because its structure is so similar to human bone, Bio-Oss® not only supports new bone growth, but also has been shown to preserve bone and overlying soft tissue, particularly in the cosmetic zone in the front of our mouth.
There are numerous other products used in Australia. These are used on merit depending on clinical circumstances and indications.
Guided Bone Regeneration is used to prevent the collapse of gums into an area of defect in bone, allowing the bone extra time to grow without needing to compete with faster growing gum tissue. At Smile Artistry™ we use 3i Osseoguard Resorbable Collagen membranes, they have great resorption times and do not require second surgeries to remove them, because they resorb and dissappear on their own! This means they are totally dissolved and resorbed by the tissue after 36 weeks. The picture below shows the filled hole from where a tooth was removed, with a thin membrane covering the hole, and the gums sutured together over the top.

In specific cases where considerable bone loss has occurred over time, our team of Specialists may become involved to assist with larger bone grafting cases. Whilst this may sound daunting at first, Bone Grafting Procedures are now common-place in Dentistry, and no matter the state of despair your mouth may be in, Dental Implant Surgery with Implant Replacement Teeth can reconstruct both your smile, and a functioning (chewing) dentition.
