COMMON DENTAL MYTHS DISPROVED
Today we are talking about some common dental myths, and why they are actually more harmful than true.
Myth 1: Mums Diet doesn’t effect a developing babies teeth! Incorrect!
There is growing evidence that poor nutrition during pregnancy makes the unborn child more likely to have tooth decay later in life. Early on during the second trimester of pregnancy, deficiencies in calcium, vitamin D, vitamin A, protein and calories can result in oral defects.
Myth 2: More sugar means more tooth decay! Part true!
It is the number of sugar exposures you consume throughout the day/night that leave sugar in contact with your teeth. Numerous hits of sugar throughout the day are far worse than the one sugar hit around mealtimes.
Foods such as soft-drinks and lollies stick around the teeth for longer and lead to more damage to the teeth enamel.
There is some research that is suggesting teens obtain about 40% of their carbohydrate intake from soft drinks!
Key Point: Decrease sugar hits each day and limit to mealtimes to stop decay.
Myth 3: Dentures improve a Persons Diet! Incorrect!
Dentures can be used to a bite force of only 10psi, whereas natural teeth bite at a force of 200psi.
This decreased bite force does alter the diet and leads to malnutrition.
Denture wearers should be advised to have a dental assessment to see if Dental Implants are suitable as soon as possible to avoid the dreaded bone loss that occurs after teeth have been lost.
