Smile Artistry's Comments on Tooth Whitening
Current whitening advertising can be quite confusing and somewhat misleading. Terms such as “ZOOM your teeth” are quite emotive. At the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Scientific Meeting (AACD), Dr Christiansen from Clinical Research Associates (CRA) reported on “In-surgery whitening techniques”. CRA is an independent dental research association that evaluates dental products independent of manufacturers and reports test results to the profession. In his report LUMAR ARCH was compared to ZOOM and other products. Lumar Arch is called LASERBRITETM in Australia .
Overall, Dr Christiansen indicated that the light sources were unnecessary. However, from my own experience, we find that the light sources DO MAKE A LARGE DIFFERENCE by simple things as close positioning of the light to the applied whitening gel as well as the age of the light bulb source (bulbs deteriorate with time and require replacement as determined intervals). Dr Christiansen also stated in his lecture that LASERS ARE NOT MORE EFFECTIVE.
After reading this CRA article, listening to the AACD lecture and considering our experiences over past years with four different In-Surgery Whitening Systems, we would advise that the important areas to be considered in making a choice on which system to use include:
Compliance and convenience of an IN-SURGERY system is very important. A home whitening system has people compliance problems with the number of applications required as well as teeth sensitivity. At home treatment requires using trays and solutions for a 10 to 14 day period.
The “In-Surgery” system should be able to be completed in the shortest time practical.
- (a) Three 8 minute applications for LASERBRITE™ will only take one hour.
- (b) The three 20 minute applications of ZOOM will in practice take 90 minutes to 2 hours to complete applications.
Comfort and lack of after sensitivity should be optimal. The LASERBRITE™ system is the most comfortable system Smile Artistry has found.
The Cost should be economical. Some systems have costs that can zoom! Out to $850.00 or more and some laser systems cost $1000.00 to $1500.00. In most cases we hear that LASERBRITE™ costs much less than all these.
A Recent trend is for Salons, and Dental Practices to heavily discount their whitening process. This is in part a special, but when you take a close look into the discount, it is usual to find that the offer for discounted teeth whitening will NOT include a take-home, follow-up, complimentary home care reboost whitening kits!
A complimentary home maintenance system should be provided for fortification of the whitening effect on special occasions (e.g. Weddings etc), or at intervals of six to nine months.
We have recently noticed an increase in Beauty Salons performing teeth whitening. This is a risky proposition in our opinion, because Beauty Therapists are NOT trained to correctly diagnose and discuss the results/risks of teeth whitening for individual people. Furthermore, only Dental/Medical Practices can legally provide you with dental care, and it is currently that when you visit the Beauty Salon you do so at your risk. The Salon will ensure that you, yourself apply the solutions and light sources, so that the Beauty Therapist is not legally involved, they just provide a room and the materials!
The system used should be effective while the whitening effect varies for each individual patient, CRA reports suggest all systems are efficient. Dr Christiansen did say that home whitening is a good choice but my experience is that it suffers from patient compliance problems and often sensitivity.
More recently there appear to be whitening treatments available direct to the public from beauty salons. Careful consideration needs to be given before undergoing these treatments, as tooth whitening by non-professional people can result in permanent damage to the nerves of your teeth. Dentists and Dental Hygienists are also specifically trained to advise on treatment outcomes and whether whitening is safe and desireable for any given person.
Attend for a Free Whitening Consultation at Smile Artistry, where our Dentists can analyse and detail the treatments available to whiten your teeth. We will review and advise areas of your mouth that will not whiten particularly well and identify if you have any fillings or crowns that will not whiten. Where whitening is suitable and safe, the Dentist will answer any further questions you may have before an appointment can be booked for your teeth whitening procedure.
