Our team is the energy that feeds Brisbane Smiles! Brisbane Smiles (Smiles Only Pty Ltd) is a family-owned Dental Practice which is committed to continual improvement and high-quality dental care. We are a single-site Dental Practice with a vision to increase from 6 to 12 dental chairs over the next 5 years (in the one primary location).

The practice commenced in 1948 at the Taringa Fiveways by Dr Max Kenny, and was moved to a purpose built facility at 31 Sherwood Road Toowong in the early 1980s by my father, Dr Graham McKay where we remain today. The practice has grown to six chairs with a full-service dental laboratory in a 434sqm facility. Our team consists of multiple role levels from the Directors to the Practice Manager to Dentists, Oral Health Therapists, Dental Hygienists, Dental Technicians, Department Leaders to Treatment Coordinators, Reception, and Dental Assistants. It is our goal to provide role progression and to see our team members grow with opportunity and experience.

We have well-defined accountability for each role and team member. This includes having an in-house Marketing role, Dental Technicians and a dedicated Call Centre with Reception staff taking responsibility for New Patient Bookings and Attendance. Since the commencement of Covid we have grown from a 10-person team to a 22+ person team and with our goals of 20% annual growth, the team is continuing to grow which delivers growth opportunities to our team members.

The practice offers all General Dental Services and we have special interests in Aesthetic and Implant Dentistry. Equally important is growing our family and children’s dental care.

Growth, Learning and Training

Our practice is committed to being future-focused and to do so we are all committed to learning. We participate in the World-Leading Platinum Level of Scheduling Institute which is a United States practice management provider who trains in over 2,300 practices worldwide each year.

The program has implemented many systems and a Trainer attends our practice each Quarter for an Onsite 2-day program (or via Zoom 2020-21).

We have found this program to be transformational in introducing different systems which have significantly improved patient experiences and comfort.

As a Director, I (Dr Paul McKay) visit the Scheduling Institute in Atlanta or Phoenix twice annually.

Our team is committed and the training days and implementation days. The team finds these days fulfilling, enjoyable and on-topic.

Culture

Our team is a passionate group of individuals who come together to form an enviable group of talented team players.

The practice is committed to celebrating ‘wins’ and also to growth both professionally and personally.

Our culture events are an opportunity for our entire team to meet and socialise.

Community

Our team supports and participates in the community. We visit over twelve childcare and kindergarten centres each year to educate young children about healthy diets and their oral health.

Over the 2021-25 period we aim to give more than $100,000 to support important charities that our team also supports. This year we have supported Royal Flying Doctors, Salvation Army, The Smith Family, Brain Child, Ovarian Cancer Foundation, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, and many more.

Technology

Our large team uses multiple levels of technology both on patients and for business operations.

Staff are empowered to complete timesheets using Deputy, and Leaders and Managers to approve timesheets using Deputy and Xero software.

Our patient care utilises the most up-to-date technology from digital intraoral sensors, Planmeca CBCT and OPG, to 3D Printers, Millings Machines, and a Full-service Dental Laboratory with four Qualified Dental Technicians on our team.
